Wucius Wong's Principles of Two-Dimensional Design is Art 101 and all of the other classes I never took condensed into one amazing 77 page book. The black-and-white illustrations alone serve to spark ideas. Arrays of dots arranged into optical patterns. Great stuff!
Also highly recommended are: Principles of Color Design, Principles of Three-Dimensional Design, and Visual Design on the Computer.
