Linked to Roderick Slater

I've mentioned the influence of my first favorite collage artist, Roderick Slater, once before. I actually own one of his pieces now. It's hard to find images of his work anywhere. From what I understand, Slater leads a quiet unconnected life somewhere in Maine.

Jonathan Talbot (another collage hero of mine) has an image of Slater's collage called Mnemonic Device on his site. And once and a while I see one on eBay. Which leads me to the reason for this post.

An eBay seller called "slaterworks207" is offering Taste Contained by Roderick Slater. In the description mentioning artists influenced by Slater, he links to AnitaNH: Collage & Life!

Pictured above is "Landslide for Erin" by Roderick Slater, with more details below.

Hi Anita
I have a bunch of Rods works. Collages and paintings. About 12 collages and 5 or 6 paintings. Most of the paintings are unfinished. My collages are from 6x8 to 24 x 30 aprox.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for commenting! Do you know Roderick Slater? If you ever post images of your holdings I would love to see them.
Best regards,

Hi. I just recently learned of Rod Slater and purchased a collage. I'd love to find a second. (Jim, how did you acquire such a large collection of works?)
Anyway, just wanted to comment, maybe I will post an image of my new piece. Anita- have you found that his work has hidden layers of information/meaning? I'm still trying to decifer this one.

Thanks for posting, J. Nathan. I'd love to see your Slater piece.

I never tire of contemplating mine. When seen under different qualities of light, the appearance or composition changes. There are areas covered with gold and silver foil which reflect the light and shine forth in some situations while in others they stay hidden in the background. Amazing!

Anita. Thanks, I will try to put up an image, but I'm not sure where yet. And, I was wondering, this is an older piece with some surface grime on a variety of medium (paper, plastic, wood) Whats the best way to clean it up? just a certain brush and patience?

For surface dust I would use a very soft watercolor brush. Apart from that I'm not sure what should be done. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Interesting to see where this image ended up:

I'm clueless about tumblr and I think I need to look into it. The artpropelled tumblr is cool.

hi, i recently had my friend scott post on here regarding my Slater collection-findings. I have between 30 and 40 signed collages ranging in size. some I believe are 6x8's and some 8x10's. ( i have yet to measure them to know for sure but plan to do so asap..) I also have ten 8x10 signed paintings which are mated and enclosed in some sort of shrink wrap plastic. then lastly i have a much larger work which is framed and consists of a acrylic paint and collage combination. It's size I believe to be 24x30. I am unsure of their worth and any help in that department would be greatly appreciated. I would like to find out as much as I can about these pieces as far as where to sell them and their value. If anyone here has any information or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated..... Thanks

I bought my first Slater today. It's a beautiful piece called 4 between 2. Slater deserve so much more recognition for his commentary on visual culture and the way he puts found images and objects together. He has picked up where Joseph Cornell left off!
